 Vicki’s Story

“I have only been a member for a few months but the YMCA has already made a big difference in my life.  I have an autoimmune disease that attacks my muscles.  I was going to physical therapy and seeing a rheumatologist and both suggested I look into the YMCA and see what they had to offer.  When I came in I met Kathy and after explaining my situation she recommended Silver Sneakers© Yoga.  It was perfect for me.  I saw drastic improvement quickly and have increased my ability to walk farther.  Before I came to the Y I couldn’t even get off a chair!  Kathy, Betty, Chris and April have been fantastic.  I get so much support and encouragement from them and that makes me want to keep coming.”

 Mike’s Story

“I was a member of the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA as a kid.  I was there six days a week.  I did everything there – basketball, boxing.  I was on the swim team too.  I learned a lot about communication and leadership skills and I made many life-long friends.  I rejoined the YMCA here for the pool and I was looking for fellowship and to relate to people my own age.  This place is like apple pie and coffee!  Everybody is so real here.  Betty and Kathy, they make you want to come in.  Even Gary greets me while he is sweeping the floors.  This place is such an important part of my life.”

 Taylor’s Story

“I am now the Youth Director here at the Y, but what is really amazing is how I got here. The month I turned 16 started working in the babysitting room here.  I had never really been here before and I didn’t know what to expect, but I instantly loved it. All the staff welcomed me, and I started to build great relationships with a lot of the parents that brought their kids to babysitting. My senior year of high school I began working as a counselor with summer camp. I loved every minute I spent with those kids. That summer really changed who I am. Before that I never knew some kids grow up without all the things I had as a child. Some kids come from pretty bad circumstances and I soon realized it was our job to make sure they had the time of their lives while they were with us.  After that summer I really started to make this place my home. I was here most days as much as I could be and hung out even after I was done working.  Four summers have gone by since that very first summer and I don’t think I’ll ever leave.”

Sue’s Story

“I take Zumba®, Zumba® Gold, Low Impact and Stretch and Chris is just wonderful.  I joined the YMCA in 2011 after my husband passed away.  My goal was to make my heart stronger and be healthy.  During my darkest hour I met a group of friends here that have become my support system. There are 8 or 10 of us who spend time together both at the Y and outside of the Y.  We go dancing, to movies and for coffee on Fridays.  Many of the ladies are also widowed – we laugh together and cry together.  I thank God for the Y and for bringing me here.  The Y has given me a reason to wake up and a place to go.”
